Often when the Boxer
dog fails to respond to a new command it isn’t the dog who’s at
fault, more likely it’s the trainer and thankfully there are
techniques the trainer can use to help the Boxer dog understand
what is required of him with suffering pain and frustration.

* So many
trainers give weak commands or even change commands for the same
desired end result. It’s very confusing for the Boxer dog
and can lead to confusion and mental anguish. Calling a dog
‘Good Boy’ one day, and ‘Good Lad’ the next is confusing for the
dog. Even worse is the act of praising him for the exact
same act that earned him a scolding earlier.
* Boxers, like
all dogs respond more readily to sounds than actual words and
might react exactly the same when hearing the word ‘Keel’ as he
might when someone shouts ‘Heel’. Hand signals from the
trainer as well as tone of voice and body language help reinforce
the command and the desired action. The trainer must use the
same words and the same tone each time to ensure the Boxer dog
understands his commands.
* Patience is the trainer’s most important tool and a bad
tempered person will never make a good trainer, nor will one who
is nervous or unsure of their training ability.
* The trainer
must be completely focused on the task at hand. He or she
must not be looking elsewhere or using a mobile phone, the
trainer’s attention must be completely on the dog or who can blame
the Boxer dog also for being inattentive during training?
